Need a Class 4 Licence for Ridesharing?
In British Columbia, if you're looking to become a commercial driver for ridesharing platforms like Lyft or Uber, obtaining a Class 4 Licence is essential. Here’s what you need to know about upgrading your licence to begin your Ridesharing Training and embark on this new career path.
Restricted Licence
The Restricted Licence Class 4 is specifically required for ride-hailing services, including taxis, limousines, ambulances, and larger commercial vehicles.
To qualify for a commercial driver licence in British Columbia, you must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a Class 5 or 6 licence or an out-of-province equivalent
- Maintain a driving record with fewer than four penalty points in the last two years
- Have no motor vehicle-related Criminal Code convictions in the past three years
- Meet medical standards and successfully pass a driver’s medical exam
- Pass a road test using a vehicle appropriate for the Class 4 licence
- Settle any outstanding fines or debts owed to ICBC
Unrestricted Licence
Obtaining a Class 4 Unrestricted Licence allows you to operate various commercial vehicles, such as:
- Buses with a maximum seating capacity of 25 (including school bus drivers and vehicles for people with disabilities)
- Taxis
- Ridesharing vehicles
- Limousines
- Ambulances
- All motor vehicles covered under the Class 5 licence

To begin, you will need a Class 4 Learner’s Licence, which can be obtained by studying the ICBC Driving Commercial Vehicles book and passing a knowledge test at a Driver Services Centre.

- Pre-trip inspection training

- A 45 minute review/warm-up drive prior to your ICBC road test
